North Melbourne face a nervous wait ahead of the AFL match review panel examining skipper Jack Ziebell’s bump on Travis Cloke.
Cloke will be sidelined for four to six weeks after suffering broken ribs as a result of the collision during the fourth quarter of the inaugural Good Friday game.
The front-on bump appeared to be within the rules but the fact Ziebell left his feet may count against him when the MRP hands down its findings on Monday afternoon.
The Bulldogs’ medical report is also likely to have a significant influence on whether he is sanctioned.
AFL great Leigh Matthews said he would be surprised if Ziebell avoids suspension.
“When you are approaching a guy who is about to kick the ball, the idea is normally you are trying to smother the kick,” he told 3AW radio.
“But Jack Ziebell didn’t try and smother the kick. He just drove his shoulder basically into the rib cage of Travis Cloke.
“It was marginally after the ball was kicked so you would think to yourself: ‘Was the bump necessary?'”
Ziebell’s former Kangaroos teammate Brent Harvey said a suspension would be against the spirit of the game.
The ball was in play, and that’s one of those things … when the ball’s there, you’re allowed to go hard for it,” he said on the Seven Network’s Gameday program.
“He’s hit him flush, he was open because he was kicking the ball. So he gets him front-on, a little bit side-on, obviously as well. There’s no head contact.
“This is footy, this is the thing. They can’t suspend Jack for that because that’s against the spirit of the game.”
Essendon’s Conor McKenna looks set to be the second player in as many weeks to be suspended for an incident involving Adelaide youngster Riley Knight.
McKenna collected Knight with a front-on bump as Knight was trying to gain possession.
Last week, Port Adelaide ruckman Paddy Ryder took a one-game ban for striking Knight.
West Coast forward Mark LeCras will come under video scrutiny for a bump on Sydney defender Aliir Aliir during Thursday night’s match.
Several players are also likely to be out of pocket after a melee broke out between Carlton and Gold Coast players at half-time at Etihad Stadium.
