AFL boss Andrew Demetriou hopes the revamped grand final entertainment, headlined by Melbourne band Temper Trap, will wipe away the memory of last year’s disastrous performance by US rocker Meat Loaf.
The Temper Trap will perform three songs at half time and an extended concert at the MCG after Saturday’s match in a move away from the traditional pre-match performances.
“When these guys (Temper Trap) come on at half time, I think hopefully we’ll put Meat Loaf behind us, hopefully it will be buried,” Mr Demetriou said on Thursday.
The AFL lured American artists Lionel Richie and Meat Loaf to perform before the past two grand finals, with mixed results.
Veteran Meat Loaf struggled to hit his notes in a performance that was widely criticised.
Mr Demetriou, the AFL chief executive, said the league had made a conscious decision to move towards home grown talent in 2012.
Australian music stalwarts Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers will also perform before and after the match.
Mr Demetriou also said a downpour on Friday could see the traditional grand final parade through the Melbourne CBD called off.
“Obviously if the rain is too heavy and there’s hail then that makes the parade difficult to proceed,” he said.
“If it got too heavy then you couldn’t have the players out in the parade, but we’re not even thinking about that, we’re thinking about the parade proceeding because we want everybody to celebrate the players.”
