Preview:

The Swans play the Giants on Saturday, 7.40PM at the SCG.  The Swans are in great form at the moment, having turned around their disappointing 1-3 season start to get themselves in 3rd ladder position.  Interestingly, Greater Western Sydney were one of the teams who beat Sydney at the start of the season, themselves getting off to a great start before losing momentum as the season progressed.  While the Giants have regained some of this momentum in the last few weeks by putting together their first ever back-to-back victories, it is highly unlikely they will make it three in a row.

News:

Melbourne veteran Daniel Cross will miss at least a month following revelations he finished Sunday’s AFL clash with a broken leg.

Cross reported some leg pain following the Demons’ 41-point loss to North Melbourne, which turned out to be a minor fracture that could sideline him for up to six weeks.

Melbourne coach Paul Roos was delivered more bad news about another of his experienced players on Tuesday, with Shannon Byrnes likely to miss the rest of the season.

“Unfortunately Byrnesy hurt his foot again … so it looks like he might be out for the rest of the season,” Roos said.

The setback to Cross, who has played a leading role in Melbourne’s resurgence this season after being discarded by Western Bulldogs, was more surprising.

The versatile midfielder underwent x-rays, which failed to pick up any issue, only for follow-up scans to confirm a crack.

“It’s good when you can say you played out a game with a broken leg, isn’t it,” Roos said.

“It makes you pretty courageous.

“He’s got a great capacity to put those things out of his head, which is amazing.”

Roos admitted the Demons would miss Cross’ 223 games of experience, but was thankful the injury occurred in round 14 and not round one.

“He was always going to be super important for us this year,” Roos said.

“Hopefully the development of the players that has taken place (this year) makes it a little bit easier for us to cover for him.”

Cross has been essentially acting as an on-field assistant coach this season, mentoring the Demons’ young on-ballers.

Roos expected the 30-year-old to be in the coaches’ box for Sunday’s clash with the Bulldogs.

Roos will have to make at least two changes for the match, with Jordie McKenzie suspended for one game.

“I often say ‘why do it’. It’s unnecessary and just costs him and the team,” Roos said.

The mastercoach was in a more joking mood when asked about his team’s record at Etihad Stadium, where they have won 16 of 46 games.

“We haven’t had too many happy hunting grounds recently,” he said.

“We even got beaten at Gosch’s Paddock a couple of times when we trained with ourselves, that’s how bad we were going.”
