Sydney Swans vs Essendon Bombers Preview

The Swans head home on Saturday sporting an impressive 2-0 record to start the season.

Last week’s scalp against Collingwood was an enormous building block for a team with serious flag aspirations, the highlight being Sydney’s outstanding defensive efforts from start to finish.

Not only did the Swans hold the Pies to just 69 points, they also generated 27 forward half intercepts – a worrying sign for a Bombers team that struggled to put away an understrength Hawthorn outfit only a week ago.

In their defence, the Dons had a long list of outs themselves, a problem Brad Scott faces again this week with Dylan Shiel, Jordan Ridley, and Darcy Parish all on the sideline.

On the plus side, Sam Draper is set to return to the ruck, while Bomber fans must be pleased with their work around the centre clearances, and Jake Stringer’s efforts up forward last week.

That said, I think the Dons benefited greatly from Hawthorn’s lack of composure in front of goal, and this is obviously a much tougher challenge against a Sydney forward line that can hurt you in many different ways.

On a smaller ground – one they haven’t won on since 2020 – I think the Bombers come back down to earth a little this week.
