Preview:
It’s Sydney vs Carlton on Friday night, 7.50pm at the SCG. The Swans will go into this one as favourites, even after suffering one of the upsets of the season by losing to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last round. While Carlton are coming into this encounter fresh from a rest, with their disappointing results so far in 2013, they will struggle at the SCG. The Swans will have to do without Adam Goodes with a knee injury, but should have no trouble overcoming the Blues at home.

Sydney’s AFL injury list is growing

Sydney veteran Ryan O’Keefe has cautioned against the Swans rushing back underdone players, as the AFL premiers deal with a lengthening injury list.

Heading into Friday’s SCG clash with Carlton, Sydney have eight premiership players unavailable, depriving them of over 1100 games of experience.

Throw in long-term injured players Gary Rohan and Tommy Walsh and the list grows to double digit proportions, though Andrejs Everitt may return this week from an Achilles issue.

Adam Goodes was the latest addition to the casualty list after injuring a knee against Port Adelaide, though he expects to miss just one game.

Rhyce Shaw (abdomen) and Lewis Roberts-Thomson (knee), have already missed ten and eight games respectively, while Lewis Jetta (shin), Sam Reid (quad) and ruckman Shane Mumford (face) are still unavailable.

“There’s still a lot of footy to go in this season,” O’Keefe said.

“You don’t really want to rush guys back a little bit underdone.”

O’Keefe said the extensive injury list wasn’t an excuse for last weekend’s upset loss to Port.

“Teams get injuries at certain times and you just have to deal with it,” O’Keefe said.

“What it does is if guys do miss a game injured, it just opens up an opportunity for someone else.

“The guys that have come in have generally done a pretty good job.”

O’Keefe stressed Sydney had to lift their workrate against Carlton after falling short in that area against Port.

“We just didn’t play well and we just didn’t work hard enough, we just stopped really and to Port Adelaide’s credit they outworked us,” O’Keefe said.

“It just came down to workrate, hardness and we’ve looked at it, assessed it, now we’ve got to do something about it.

“We can’t really talk about it much more. We know what we’ve done wrong. Now we’ve just got to go out and do it.”

Sydney have a six-day turnaround, while the Blues are coming off a two-week break.
