Sydney bury two bogeys, one to go

Two bogeys laid to rest, just one to go for the Sydney Swans following Friday’s 26-point AFL preliminary final win over Collingwood at ANZ Stadium.

Going into the finals, Adelaide and Collingwood were the only teams Sydney coach John Longmire hadn’t enjoyed a victory against.

Even his revered predecessor Paul Roos had trouble with both teams, but the 2012 Swans have shown recent history counts for diddly squat in the fierce furnace of finals competition.

Beaten in eight of their previous nine games by Adelaide, they tanned the Crows in their own nest in a qualifying final and on Friday ended their 11-match losing streak against the Magpies with another strong performance despite the odd wobble either side of the final change.

Regardless of whether their grand final opponent is Hawthorn or Adelaide, who clash in Saturday’s second preliminary final, Sydney have one last bogey to bury.

The Swans have lost eight and drawn one of their past nine games at the MCG, where they haven’t won for three years and have tasted victory only once in their past 15 matches at the famous venue.

Their only MCG engagement this year ended in a 32-point loss to Richmond in round seven.

Swans supporters will tell you travel sickness isn’t an issue for a side that has gone 3-3 in Victoria this year and has won all five of their other games outside of Sydney.

Sydney shared the spoils in their two 2012 clashes with the Hawks, winning by 37 points in Tasmania, but losing by seven at the SCG.

However, Hawthorn have won five of their past seven against the Swans, including their past four MCG clashes.
