Swans to spend with confidence

Sydney president Richard Colless says last weekend’s AFL premiership win will enable the club to spend money with more confidence, as they try to keep pace with the competition’s “mega clubs.”

Colless recalled when Sydney won their last flag in 2005 there was an increase in virtually all their revenue streams, though he said it wasn’t a massive spike.

He said what it did do was embolden the board to spend money in anticipation of getting more revenue and expected something similar to happen this year.

“I think as a consequence of winning the premiership we will probably spend money that we were going to anyway, but we’ll spend it with a fair bit more confidence than perhaps would have been the case,” Colless told AAP.

Asked what the Swans would be spending money on Colless said: “It’s all to do with football facilities, football personnel systems, just competing with the mega clubs.

“You need things like winning a premiership to give you that confidence boost to spend money on better facilities, better equipment, more personnel, more world class systems.”

Colless anticipated Sydney would again get a boost in all their revenue areas, but said it wouldn’t happen as automatically as in an AFL-conscious city like Melbourne.

“We would like to think there would be more corporate support…we’d like to think that our membership base would grow,” Colless said.

“We’d like to think that corporate hospitality would be a lot more attractive, we’d like to think our merchandise side would grow.

“We’d like to think that every aspect of the revenue raising part of the organisation would get a fillip from this.

“But I think the thing to emphasise is that it doesn’t happen naturally.

“This is not Melbourne where you win a flag and people queue up around the block to buy a scarf or something. You’ve got to work at it.”
