Swans pair lifting for run home: Longmire

Sydney AFL coach John Longmire says his prime movers Adam Goodes and Shane Mumford are coming back into form and should be fresh for the tailend of the AFL season.

Longmire was encouraged by the efforts of both men against Greater Western Sydney last Saturday, when the second-placed Swans notched their fourth successive victory.

Ruckman Mumford tallied his most touches and tackles this season in his fourth game back from a six-match layoff.

Forward-midfielder Goodes, in his second game after a five-match absence, doubled his disposals and marks from the previous game and kicked 2.2.

“They are getting better. I think that both players are now getting back into a bit of form,” Longmire told reporters on Monday.

“We were looking at Shane’s game again on the tape and I think he played better again than what I thought he did after the game.

“He’s certainly getting better every week now. He’s played four weeks of footy and his attack around the ball, around the contest provides you with another midfield option when the ball hits the deck.

“Goodesy kicked a couple of goals and I thought the longer the game went, the better he felt.

“After the game he felt terrific and certainly today he was a lot better than what he was last week, so I expect those blokes to be building on their form and fitness.”

Longmire felt the enforced injury break for both Goodes and Mumford would leave them with plenty in the tank for the remainder of the season.

“They should be feeling pretty fresh, they haven’t had the big workload in the first half of the year that some other players have had,” Longmire said.

“Whilst it takes them a bit of time to get a bit of fitness back, once they get that back they should be feeling pretty good, because they missed a fair bit of footy in the first half of the year.

“When you’ve got two of your more important players hopefully in the back end of the year coming into a bit of form and fitness it does help the others as well as those two blokes.”

Midfielder Dan Hannebery (rolled ankle) is the only slight injury concern for Sydney heading into Saturday’s SCG clash with Brisbane, though Longmire expected him to play.
