Coach John Longmire has told Sydney not to dare dream about an AFL premiership just yet.
But Longmire concedes his Swans hit a perfect tune by crunching Adelaide by 29 points in Saturday’s qualifying final.
Sparked by talisman Adam Goodes, Sydney secured a home preliminary final by thumping the Crows 11.5 (71) to 5.12 (42) in Adelaide.
But Longmire says a premiership remains “a fair way off” for the Swans.
“We’re just fortunate now we’re in a position where we can sit back and plan and prepare for a home preliminary final in two weeks,” Longmire said.
“And from the moment I walk out this door, that is all I will be focusing on.
“We have had a pretty crash and bash month … it has been a pretty hectic schedule which I think has been good for us at this time of the year.
“It has really tuned us up to play hard, tough finals footy.
“But I’m sure a few blokes will enjoy having a weekend not playing and hopefully freshen us up.”
Sydney forward Ben McGlynn is doubtful for the preliminary final with a strained hamstring while the Crows, now pitched into a home knockout semi-final on Friday night, lost rising star defender Daniel Talia to a suspected broken arm.
Talia started the game matched against Goodes, who was at his majestic best in a match-defining opening half.
Goodes booted three goals and set up another two as the Swans crafted a 24-point lead at halftime.
The Crows, cruelled by wayward goal shooting, never got within three goals again.
“We probably got taught a bit of a lesson in how to play finals footy,” Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson said.
“We won’t sit around and sulk … we’re not done with yet, we have got plenty of fight left in us.”
Sydney’s midfield was relentless, led by Ryan O’Keefe (37 disposals) shading key Crow Scott Thompson, and Josh Kennedy collecting 35 touches.
And the Swans defence was heroic – Adelaide entered their attacking 50m arc 59 times for just five goals.
Fullback Ted Richards contained Adelaide’s dangerman Taylor Walker, who kicked 1.3 – all misses from set shots – and defenders Rhys Shaw (27 possessions), Nick Malceski (20 disposals) and Martin Mattner (21 touches) repelled numerous advances.
