For all the praise being heaped on Greater Western Sydney’s squad ahead of Sydney’s AFL derby, it’s easy to forget the young talent at the Swans’ disposal.
Sydney coach John Longmire says he was one of few to spruik the capabilities of GWS’s raw list before the season started – having studied them closely in the pre-season.
Now it seems the entire football community has jumped on the Giant bandwagon.
Longmire was happy to pile on further GWS plaudits at Friday’s pre-match press conference, but also used the opportunity to highlight the wares of Sam Reid, Lewis Jetta and Dan Hannebery – who have an average age of 21.6.
“Their (GWS) attack on the ball – blokes like Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron just have a real crack at it,” Longmire said.
“There’s a number of them … but I think we’ve got a few good young kids too.
“You look at Sam Reid, Jetta and Hannebery – we’ve got a good strong group of core youngsters coming through.”
GWS coach Kevin Sheedy said it would be at least two years until his side breaches the gap to the Swans and few are expecting the league’s latest derby to have much sizzle anytime soon.
Longmire believed both side’s young guns could create a unique rivalry due to their age.
“There’s some good young talent coming through for both teams – that means they’ll be able to play on each other for a long period of time and create their own rivalry,” he said.
“Not just in a team sense, but in a one-on-one sense … that’s what both clubs can look forward to over the next 10-12 years.”
