Swan Sam Reid subbed out in Freo AFL final

Sydney forward Sam Reid has been subbed out of his side’s AFL qualifying final against Fremantle after injuring his hamstring.

Reid thumped the fence in frustration after suffering the injury while running for a loose ball in the forward pocket early in Saturday’s second quarter in Perth.

The 23-year-old had looked good up until that point, booting a goal in the opening term to help stem Fremantle’s early onslaught.

Reid’s injury is all the more significant, the Swans already without Lance Franklin, who is battling a mental health issue.

“That’s September for Sydney,” AFL great Mark Ricciuto said of the Swans’ flag chances once Reid went down.

Fremantle were also dealt an injury blow after defender Luke McPharlin withdrew before the match because of a sore calf.

McPharlin battled calf issues in the second half of last season, and he was also grounded earlier this year because of the complaint.
