Gold Coast claimed the biggest scalp of their AFL history with a thrilling seven-point win over Collingwood on Saturday.
Led by another stirring display from captain Gary Ablett and youngster Jaeger O’Meara, the Suns secured an unlikely 13.7 (85) to 11.12 (78) win at Metricon Stadium.
Ablett further enhanced his Brownlow Medal prospects with a sensational 49-disposal, two-goal performance while 19-year-old O’Meara kicked three goals for the Suns.
Mercurial talent Jared Brennan also played a key hand with three goals while Trent McKenzie, Harley Bennell and Jarod Harbrow also starred.
The loss puts a big dent in Collingwood’s top four aspirations and has them looking nervously at the teams just outside the eight.
The Magpies created plenty of opportunities but were often guilty of failing to convert, with Travis Cloke a prime culprit.
The big forward booted four behinds and missed one shot completely before kicking two majors in the third term.
Dane Swan also had two for the Magpies while Jamie Elliott’s two goals were both on the end of sensational play, a screamer of a mark in the first quarter and another on the run in the final term.
