Home clashes with some of the biggest teams in AFL highlight next year’s fixture list for Gold Coast, the club’s chief executive believes.
The Suns will host premiers Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong and Collingwood at Metricon Stadium in 2014 in what CEO Travis Auld thinks is a huge plus for the fledging club.
The Magpies’ visit to the Gold Coast was easily the Suns’ biggest home crowd for the 2013 campaign and Auld thinks their return, as well as the large fanbases of the Hawks and Tigers, will provide plenty of atmosphere.
“Importantly for our local economy we have the big clubs coming here again, and we have seen in the last three years, the impact of having teams like Collingwood come up to the Gold Coast,” he told the Suns’ website.
“We have the Pies again which we are really pleased to host, and also Hawthorn and Richmond who have big supporter bases which will travel up to support their teams.”
The Suns start their campaign against the Tigers at Metricon Stadium on March 15.
It’s the first time the Tigers have been to the Gold Coast after playing the Suns in Cairns for the past three seasons.
The Suns will still head to north Queensland, taking on the Western Bulldogs at Cazalys Stadium to ensure Guy McKenna’s men play 13 of 22 matches in Queensland.
