Suns accept challenge to break AFL cycle

Breaking a cycle of failure which has dogged Gold Coast throughout its existence is the motivating factor behind the AFL club hitting the reset button in 2019.

Suns’ chief executive Mark Evans has launched a community campaign with the catch cry “Challenge Accepted” in a bid to reverse the fortunes of a club most are tipping to struggle again this season.

Since joining the league in 2011, the Suns best finish to a season remains their 12th place in 2014.

They enter 2019 after a four-win campaign last year and following the departures of co-captains Tom Lynch and Steven May.

In a bid to put the club on a different path, Evans said the club’s coaching structure had been overhauled with 13 new players and 14 new staff joining the Suns in 2019.

“We looked at it and said if we keep going in the path we are we stay in the same cycle,” he said.

“It’s time to do something different. It was time to reset the coaching department. To reset what we were doing from a conditioning perspective, to bring in some new players.”

Evans said the success of their new direction will come down more to the club’s fans and how much belief the Suns can generated over the next few seven months.

“This is a real reset of mindset and attitude. We need to inspire the community by what we do on the field and the manner in which we do that,” he said.

“When we get to the end of this season, if the people who are really close to the club and have seen the club say ‘we’ve noticed a change and that change is going to take you somewhere’ then that is what we’re after.

“I’m not sure what that means. Is that four wins, eight wins, 12 wins, 16 wins? It can be anything in there so long as people believe that we’re on the right path.”
