Sumner re-signs with AFL club GWS

Liam Sumner has signed a contract extension with Greater Western Sydney, tying him to the fledging AFL club until the end of 2016.

Sumner was taken with pick 10 in the 2011 draft and has played six games for the Giants.

He follows in the footsteps of fellow youngsters Jon Patton, Jeremy Cameron, Stephen Coniglio, Adam Treloar, Dylan Shiel, Tomas Bugg, and Toby Greene in re-signing with GWS.

“I’m really happy to be playing my football here in Sydney. We have a great group of guys here at the Giants, and I love the lifestyle too,” Sumner said.

“The playing group is working really hard and despite us not stringing four quarters together yet this season, I believe we have a big future and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

It means Victorians Nick Haynes and Taylor Adams are the only out-of-contract players remaining from the Giants’ 11 first-round 2011 draft picks.

Meanwhile, Brisbane ruckman Matthew Leuenberger says he has no interest in leaving the Lions.

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy has declared the need for his club to recruit a ruckman at season’s end, and pundits suggested off-contract Leuenberger was one of the Giants’ main targets.

But 24-year-old Leuenberger, taken with the fourth pick of the 2006 draft, is adamant he wants to stay put.

“I love it here,” Leuenberger told the AFL website.

“I think good things are about to come. I haven’t hung around here for this long to leave as soon as it’s starting to come good, so I’ve got no intentions of leaving.”

The injury-prone ruckman said he wanted to play more matches this season before beginning contract talks.

“I heard about that GWS thing or whatever it was. What can you say? I haven’t even spoken to Brisbane yet.

“I’ve only come off three games last year so I don’t think we’re going to be talking contracts any time soon.

“People are going to make what they make of it. I’ve got no intentions to hold the club at ransom or anything like that.”
