Preview:

The West Coast Eagles play St Kilda Saints on Sunday, 4.40pm at Etihad Stadium. While the Saints continue to look average at best, they are at least in with a shot against the Eagles. The West Coast had a bad week in Round 10 against Richmond, and will have to regain confidence to bounce back and beat the Saints without the help of their captain Darren Glass. The Eagles will still go into this encounter as favourites, however, with St Kilda having an equally bad game last week against North Melbourne.

Eagles’ AFL finals hopes on the edge

It seemed unthinkable at the start of the year, but West Coast will miss the AFL finals unless they can pull off a series of upsets in the second half of the AFL season.

The Eagles started the season as second favourites to win the flag, behind only Hawthorn.

But at 5-5 after 10 rounds and coming off a poor loss to Richmond, West Coast’s top-four hopes appear shot and just making the eight will be tough.

A win against lowly St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday is a must.

Then it gets really hard.

Their run home includes clashes with Hawthorn (away), Essendon (twice), Adelaide (twice), Fremantle, Sydney (home), Geelong (home) and Collingwood (away).

They’ll start favourites against the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne in round 18 and Gold Coast in Perth a week later.

But with probably seven or eight more wins needed to play finals, they’ll require a major form reversal to beat some of the competition’s heavyweights.

In their favour, they still boast a star ruck double-act with Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui, some quality tall forwards and an experienced quality defence, led by veteran Darren Glass, although he’ll miss the Saints clash with a hip injury.

And while critics suggest they lack speed in the midfield, coach John Worsfold disagrees, suggesting his side’s biggest issues are mental and can be quickly turned around, starting against the Saints.

“Sport shows that mindset can turn around really quickly,” Worsfold said.

“If it was a physical thing, that may take more work.

“It’s not so much structural, I don’t think.

“I would say it’s our overall ball use and maybe it’s confidence.

“But I’m comfortable that we’ll have the group physically and mentally up and going this week.”

Along with Glass, the Eagles have lost Mark LeCras, who has been experiencing soreness in the arm he broke earlier this year.

The Saints, who in 16th spot on a 2-8 record are out of finals contention, are also looking to bounce back after being outscored by 55 points in the first quarter by North Melbourne to set up a 68-point loss last round.

They’ve lost experienced defender Sam Fisher (foot) and dropped youngsters Jackson Ferguson, Arryn Siposs and Ahmed Saad.

Coach Scott Watters expects the Eagles to be sparked by their loss to the Tigers, but says his side also have something to prove.

“I know they’ll be fired up – they wouldn’t be happy with that performance at home,” Watters said.

“But we’ll worry about what we need to deliver.

“We need to be ferocious from the start so we look forward to that.”
