Six-year AFL deal for Giant Greene

All-Australian AFL forward Toby Greene has agreed to a lucrative six-year contract extension – the longest deal ever offered to a Greater Western Sydney player.

The 24-year-old Greene has kicked 123 goals in 117 games for GWS since making his debut in the Giants’ first match in their inaugural season in 2012.

“I arrived here when I was 18 and these are the boys I’ve grown up with,” said Greene.

“The club is like my family, Sydney is my home and there’s no doubt this is where I want to play footy.

“We’ve been on a pretty unique journey together and that hasn’t finished yet. We have plenty to improve on, heaps more to learn and we’re all in it together.”

Other star Giants to have signed new deals in the past couple of years include Jeremy Cameron, Josh Kelly, Stephen Coniglio and Jon Patton.

But Greene is no certainty to play in the round-one clash against the Western Bulldogs in Canberra on March 25 after breaking a toe in the off-season.

GWS list manager Jason McCartney was thrilled to have locked Greene into the long-term deal.

“As one of the club’s original draftees back in 2011, this deal should see Toby become the first player to play his entire career as a Giant,” he said.

“As we all know, Toby is an outstanding player and it’s fantastic that he’s committed to the club for another six seasons.

“We all see what Toby produces on-field but it’s his impact around the club that makes him one of a kind.

“He’s the heart and soul of our footy club.”
