Sicily and Thomas sent to AFL tribunal

Hawks star Tom Mitchell does not face suspension, meaning his Brownlow Medal hopes stay alive, but AFL match reviewer Michael Christian has referred Port Adelaide forward Lindsay Thomas and Hawthorn defender James Sicily directly to the tribunal.

Thomas has been sanctioned twice from the weekend and along with Geelong captain Joel Selwood faces a one-game ban, both for striking each other.

The bans are among a busy 12 charges from the weekend’s games.

Thomas was sent to the tribunal for rough conduct after his bump on Geelong’s Scott Selwood, an incident that former Geelong captain Cameron Ling called a dog act.

Saturday night’s clash at Adelaide Oval was the first for Thomas since joining Port from North Melbourne.

Christian referred Sicily to the tribunal for serious misconduct against North Melbourne’s Shaun Atley in the Sunday match at Etihad Stadium.

Sicily is alleged to have stood on Atley’s leg while he was lying on the ground.

Mitchell can accept a $1500 fine for elbowing Kangaroos ruckman Todd Goldstein.

If Christian had handed Mitchell a suspension it would have made him ineligible for the Brownlow Medal unless the Hawks star successfully took the case to the tribunal.

Hawthorn defender Ryan Burton was cleared for his bump on North star Shaun Higgins.

They also accidentally clashed heads and Higgins was concussed as a result.

Christian had a busy Monday, handing out 12 charges, and Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield was fined $2000 for rough conduct on Justin Westhoff.

Along with his one-game striking ban, Joel Selwood was also fined $1000 for attempting to trip Chad Wingard.

Other players to receive fines are North Melbourne pair Cameron Zurhaar and Majak Daw, Gold Coast’s Touk Miller and Jesse Lonergan, and Hawthorn’s James Cousins.
