Sheedy says AFL ‘pest control’ needed

Veteran coach Kevin Sheedy has called on the AFL to rid itself of any pharmaceutical influence.

Sheedy, who coached Essendon for 27 years, also praised David Evans in the wake of the stunning news that the Essendon chairman had left the post on Saturday.

Evans quit as Essendon come to the closing stages of an anti-doping investigation into last year’s supplements program at the club.

“It really is very frustrating to see that one of your most important coaches has got to be a pharmaceutical coach,” Sheedy said.

“Give me a break, you are kidding yourself, get rid of them, get them out of the game, and hunt them down.

“We might have to get some pest control.

“Why would you need pharmacists? You are kidding, give us a break, Australian people won’t cop that.”

Sheedy added that the circumstances of the crisis remained murky.

“It is great that Essendon put it on the table, but you don’t know who is shafting who here. And get on with it,” he said.

“Let the truth come out as Hirdy (Essendon coach James Hird) would say.”

Sheedy said despite Essendon’s problems, Evans deserved praise.

“I just think he is a fantastic person, I always have,” Sheedy said.

“He has gone through an enormous amount to try and keep that ship steering out there, it has obviously been disappointing for the footy fans and the Bombers fans.

“So in the end, what will happen will happen and we will see.”
