Greater Western Sydney AFL coach Kevin Sheedy says he wants to be involved with the Giants for some time to come, though the club has yet to decide whether he will retain his position for next season.
Four-time Essendon premiership coach Sheedy has piloted the fledgling club through their inaugural AFL campaign but his contract expires at the end of this season.
A decision on Sheedy’s future was widely tipped on Wednesday, but the Giants instead announced it was naming its club champion trophy after him.
GWS chief executive David Matthews said it wasn’t a fate accompli that Sheedy would be reappointed for next year, though he suggested the club wanted the veteran coach to continue in some capacity.
Sheedy wasn’t overly fussed about the continuing speculation over whether he would remain as head coach.
“We will sit down with the club over the next month or two and work that out,” Sheedy told reporters.
“It’s not a major problem as far as I am concerned really.
“People know that when I go into a club I normally stay a while.
“I spent a long time at Richmond and a long time at Essendon, I don’t move around too much, but I want to get the job done and normally I get the job done.”
Asked how long he wanted to keep coaching the Giants, who have former Port Adelaide premiership winning coach Mark Williams among their assistants Sheedy said: “A while, just a while, whether it’s a long while or short while doesn’t matter.”
