Hawthorn defender Ryan Schoenmakers has suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Scans on Sunday confirmed the Hawks’ worst fears, with the 22-year-old to undergo a reconstruction in the next few days after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The injury was sustained in Saturday’s 42-point win over Fremantle in Launceston.
Hawthorn’s new general manager of football operations James Fantasia said Schoenmakers was understandably devastated with the news.
“While Ryan is naturally disappointed by the injury, we’re certain he will approach his rehabilitation with the same professionalism, positivity and dedication he has displayed as a young player,” Fantasia said.
Brian Lake is almost certain to be Schoenmakers’ replacement against North Melbourne on Sunday in what would be the former Western Bulldogs star’s first senior game for his new club.
