Selection axe poised over Pies: Buckley

Coach Nathan Buckley says a selection axe is hovering over some Collingwood players as Dayne Beams prepares for his first game this year.

Beams, barring another mishap with a thigh injury that has wrecked his season, will return with Tyson Goldsack (hip), both likely in VFL ranks.

Buckley said goalsneak Nathan Krakouer, tall defender Ben Reid and ex-Hawk Clinton Young will all press for senior selection in the wake of Collingwood’s 35-point loss to Port Adelaide on Saturday.

“It’s good to have some competition for spots,” Buckley said as Collingwood face a Friday night clash against arch rivals Carlton.

“There were obviously some players tonight that had their colours lowered and if that happens too consistently, then clearly selection has to come in to play.”

Buckley blamed sloppy skills for a loss to Port which leaves the Magpies struggling to keep their hold in the top eight.

“We weren’t clean with the ball at all, clean in the contests – or as hard as Port were,” he said.

“We had our chances and we didn’t take advantage on the scoreboard, when Port had their chances, they took them.

“We have got some work to do. We’re on a path and we’re learning a style of game that we think is going to win games of football against the best opposition.”
