Geelong captain Joel Selwood has been put on notice by his coach Chris Scott after an off-the-ball incident against Brisbane.
Selwood escaped any penalty from the AFL match review panel, who declared that his strike on Lions’ tagger Andrew Raines wasn’t of sufficient force to warrant a report.
But Raines was charged by the match review panel for his retaliatory strike on Selwood, who was concussed later in the match following a knock to the head.
Scott admitted scrutiny of the incident involving Raines was “fair enough” and said Selwood was lucky to avoid a charge.
And Scott said the star midfielder would need to modify the way he played in the future.
“If he puts himself in this situation again then we all need to ask questions of ourselves,” Scott said.
“He was fortunate in this example.
“He needs to make a slight adjustment to how he reacts to defensive players off the ball.”
Scott said that the club was closely monitoring the number of high knocks Selwood took because of his courageous style of play and were uncertain about whether he would line up against Melbourne this weekend.
“Certainly we are concerned about him, not because he’s one of our best players and our captain, but because he’s a Geelong player,” Scott said.
“We’ll make sure we take every precaution to ensure that when he goes out there he’s fully fit.
“At the time he was a bit sick and sore and we’ve just got to take our time with him to make sure that he is right.”
Scott said that he was unable to say early in the week whether Selwood would play against the Demons.
“In these situations on a Tuesday we really can’t tell you too much, but by Friday we’ll know. We’ll make a conservative decision as we do with all our players,” he said.
