Port Adelaide fans will stick by the club despite the axing of coach Matthew Primus and the departure of president Brett Duncanson, Power supporter and South Australian premier Jay Weatherill says.
The Power on Monday sacked Primus, ending his two-season tenure as coach, while Duncanson announced his decision to stand down in December.
The moves follow Port’s embarrassing loss to Greater Western Sydney on Saturday and the team’s inconsistent form all season.
Mr Weatherill said his club was going through some tough times.
“My message to the boys down at Port Adelaide is that your long-time supporters are going to stick with you,” he said.
“We know that when times are tough you find out who your true friends are and I know that the Port Adelaide supporters will rally around this club.”
The premier urged all Port fans to flock to the next home game against the West Coast Eagles on August 19.
“This club has a fine history and it’s not going to leave behind that tradition,” he said.
“It will fight its way out of this and my message is we’re right behind them.”
