Port Adelaide and Adelaide are set to shape the second round of the AFL draft, with the South Australian clubs holding three of the first four picks when the selection meeting continues at Marvel Stadium.

Following a trade with Carlton, the Power will kick off the second round on Thursday evening with the 22nd overall pick, with Adelaide holding the 24th and 25th selections.

Gold Coast snapped up Victorian duo Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson with the first two picks of the draft, with 21 gun youngsters in total selected in Wednesday night’s first round.

But there are still plenty of high-quality prospects available.

With the draft now spread across two days and live trading allowed, clubs have a lot more time to assess the talent still on the board and attempt to move up the order, making early second-round picks valuable commodities.

“It’s pretty sought after,” Power recruiting chief Geoff Parker said of the first pick of the second round.

“Basically as soon as Richmond took their pick (No.21) we took a couple of phone calls with clubs enquiring if we wanted to trade it already.

“But there’s also a couple of players that we still rate really highly who are still sitting there.

“We are in a really good spot for Thursday night.”

Port gave pick 20 to the Blues, who used it on Northern Knights midfielder Sam Philp, in return for picks 22 and 55.

Parker was comfortable moving down the order given the quality still available and also knowing he needs later draft picks to secure father-son nominee Jackson Mead.

Brisbane hold the 23rd overall pick but are less willing to entertain trade offers given it will be their first call in the draft.

Adelaide, however, have already snared their key defender of the future in Fischer McAsey at No.6.

They have the luxury of auctioning either No.24 or 25 or both off to the highest bidder, while also holding a third second-round pick (39), as clubs clamber for players who have slid down the order.

“We’ll talk to some clubs,” Crows recruiter Hamish Ogilvie said.

“We’ll build a plan and see how we go but we’re in a really good position with those two picks.

“There’s still some really good players on the board, so we think clubs might come up for players they like.”
