Adelaide’s defensive pillar Ben Rutten had two reasons for his decision to continue his AFL career next year.

Rutten is convinced the Crows can make a rapid rise after missing this year’s finals.

And the 30-year-old wants to use next season as further study for a coaching career.

“I’m really enjoying mentoring the young group of defenders we have got,” Rutten told reporters on Monday.

“I’m really enthusiastic about getting into coaching after footy. And I feel like I can play a significant role in their careers – this year, next year.”

The 211-game veteran signed a one-year deal on Monday as he and the Crows, who were beaten preliminary finalists last year, shifted attention to 2014.

Rutten said Adelaide’s preparation for next year “starts now” after being knocked out of finals contention by Port Adelaide on Sunday.

“You get so close last year, and things haven’t gone our way this year, our form hasn’t been great,” Rutten said.

“But I’m really positive about the group we have got, I’m thinking we can turn it around really quickly. I’m really keen to be part of that.”

Adelaide’s non-finals fate was decided by Sunday’s four-point loss to bitter rivals Port in the last Showdown at AAMI Stadium, with games moving to a redeveloped Adelaide Oval next season.

The Crows blew a 20-point lead with five minutes remaining and Port kicked two goals in the final 90 seconds to steal victory.

“We shouldn’t have lost the game from that situation. There is a bit of shock,” Rutten said.

“It is shattering. Just the result itself, and the last Showdown at AAMI Stadium – it was a big occasion for both footy clubs.”
