Roughead in for AFL return against Dockers

Hawthorn star Jarryd Roughead will make his AFL injury comeback in Friday night’s pre-season clash with Fremantle in Perth.

Roughead, who has not played since tearing his Achilles in June last year, was named in the Hawks’ squad on Wednesday.

Fellow stars Sam Mitchell, Josh Gibson, Shaun Burgoyne and Brent Guerra will also return.

Roughead will be looking to find match fitness and push his case for playing in the opening round of the home-and-away season against Collingwood at the MCG on March 30.

Coach Alastair Clarkson said after Saturday night’s win over Melbourne that Roughead might play only a quarter or a half against the Dockers.

Fremantle decided against risking crucial ruckman Aaron Sandilands, who is recovering from a minor calf injury.

The Magpies recalled several star players for Friday’s meeting with St Kilda at Carlton’s Visy Park.

Midfield guns Luke Ball and Dale Thomas will both return, along with premiership defenders Heath Shaw, Alan Toovey and Tyson Goldsack.

The Saints added pacy forward recruits Terry Milera and Ahmed Saad to their line-up.

“They get an opportunity to really impress. They’ve both had really good pre-seasons,” coach Scott Watters said.

“They just add a little bit of pace to our side, which is really important.”

Melbourne dropped young key forward Jack Watts for Friday night’s encounter with Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

The Demons recalled ex-skipper Brad Green and defender Joel Macdonald.

The Power were forced to leave out Nick Salter, who is experiencing bone stress in the foot on which he had surgery last year.
