Roos wants AFL umps boss to communicate

Melbourne coach Paul Roos believes better communication would help eliminate much of AFL coaches’ umpire-related angst.

Roos found one decision in his side’s loss to Western Bulldogs particularly baffling, when Lynden Dunn was penalised for hands in the back with the game in the balance.

Discontent over umpires is as old as the game itself, but it is becoming a regular talking point this season.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon, a former understudy of Roos, remarked last month he didn’t “know what a free kick is or isn’t anymore”.

Roos suggested much of the problem was related to tweaking the interpretation of certain rules mid-season.

In response, Roos proposed a weekly update from the league’s umpires coach Hayden Kennedy.

“If there is a weekly memo from the umpires saying `look we feel the umpires are umpiring really well (in regards to) this, this and this but we feel like the 50m penalty or hands in the back rule (needs work)’,” Roos said on Tuesday.

“Let’s not call it the rule of the week but say the umpires are refocusing on something.”

Roos suggested the proposed note should also be available to fans.

“I think that would help the public as well,” he said.

Within hours of Roos’ comments, Kennedy was among the crowd at Collingwood training.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley used the meeting to pick the brain of the umpires boss, who officiated in 495 VFL/AFL games between 1988-2011.

“We were keen to take the opportunity and I think this is a fantastic initiative by the umpiring department to maintain those relationships,” Buckley said.

“We seek continued clarity about how the ruck interpretations are progressing, in marking contests and the holds around clearances.”

Earlier this season Buckley asked the league’s umpiring department to review tagger Brent Macaffer’s tactics after his controversial shutdown job on Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

Roos felt he was still in the dark about the Dunn free kick that led to Stewart Crameri’s goal in the fourth quarter at the MCG last Saturday.
