‘Roos beat Blues in AFL practice match

Carlton have ended their AFL pre-season without a win after North Melbourne beat them by 16 points on Sunday at Visy Park.

Kangaroos key forward Drew Petrie starred with seven goals as they dominated in the third term to win 18.8 (116) to 15.10 (100).

The Blues are widely tipped to feature prominently in the finals this year, but have their problems heading into the traditional round-one clash against Richmond.

Several key players, including key defender Michael Jamison and forward Andrew Walker, will not be ready for the start of the season.

Captain Chris Judd looked scratchy on Sunday after recovering from off-season shoulder injury and, other than Jarrad Waite, they struggled to find marking forwards against North.

By contrast, the Kangaroos were impressive and will go into their round-one clash against Essendon with confidence.

Carlton led by seven points at quarter-time and extended their advantage to 16 points midway through the second term.

But Petrie kicked two goals to give him four for the half and the ‘Roos only trailed by two points at the main break.

They then swamped Carlton with seven more unanswered goals for a 40-point lead.

Two goals to Dennis Armfield and one to Shaun Hampson stopped the match from becoming a blowout and the Blues were still in touch at three-quarter time, trailing by 24 points.

Jeff Garlett kicked the first goal of the last term to put the pressure on North and Carlton were starting to dominate play.

But they were unable to capitalise and the ‘Roos steadied, with Petrie kicking his seventh to help seal the win.
