Gary Rohan has the look of a fireman with his red hair and lately he’s playing like one in the AFL.
The Sydney utility kicked the winning goal after the siren last Friday night against Essendon.
The week before he also kicked the final goal of the match as the Swans beat Richmond by nine points.
Recalled to the senior team for the Richmond match, Rohan is proving invaluable as the Swans put him where they most need a lift.
Expect him to be in attack again if the scores are close in Friday night’s big game against Melbourne at the MCG.
After the Essendon win, coach John Longmire paid credit to assistant coach Stuart Dew for coming up with the idea to throw Rohan forward.
“We’ve played him down back the last couple of weeks and that’s the beauty of him,” Dew told AAP.
“Because he’s so quick, he can play tall, small, you can throw him around a bit and put him where we think we need a bit of bite.
“He’s certainly a handy magnet to have on the board … put out some spot fires.”
The Richmond game was a marked contrast to the previous time Sydney and Rohan were at the MCG.
In round six, the injury-plagued Swan landed heavily on his neck after a collision with Carlton defender Sam Rowe and was stretchered from the field.
It was also the Swans’ worst performance so far this year as they capped a six-game losing streak.
Now they have won six of their last seven games and are sitting just outside the top eight.
The Swans have a five-game winning streak against Melbourne, but Dew said that is meaningless given how much the Demons have improved.
Melbourne are fifth, two games above Sydney, and they are well on track to play finals for the first time in 11 years.
The Demons have lost Christian Salem and Josh Garlett to hamstring problems, with Josh Wagner and Mitch White taking their places.
Veteran Jarrad McVeigh and Zac Jones are back for Sydney, who dropped Callum Sinclair, while Will Hayward has a foot injury.
