Rodan talks up Melbourne’s AFL tall timber

Melbourne AFL recruit David Rodan is confident the club’s beefed-up forward line is capable of kicking big scores in 2013.

Rodan joined his third club at training on Friday following 176 games with Richmond and Port Adelaide.

The small forward, who was sixth in the AFL for bounces in 2010 with 60, said he was determined to play a free-running role. Rodan, 29, said his knees were fine despite three reconstructions including two with the LARS method.

“Run with the ball, take it forward and drive it in deep,” Rodan said on Friday of his game plan.

The Demons have recruited tall forwards Cam Pedersen from North Melbourne and Chris Dawes from Collingwood after securing ex-Lion Mitch Clark a year ago.

“So (we’ve) got some pretty big forwards in there as well (and we) want to get it to them,” Rodan told afl.com.au

“Once you get it to them, they’ll do the rest.”

The Demons finished in 16th place with four wins and 18 losses in 2012, ahead of second-year club Gold Coast and rookies Greater Western Sydney.

Melbourne haven’t played finals football since 2006.

“We’re hoping to get some success as soon as we can,” Rodan said.

Clark is yet to resume full training following a foot injury which ended his season in round 13 after kicking 29 goals in 11 games.

Clark ran on a special treadmill on Monday. Melbourne’s elite performance manager Dave Misson says the big forward will hopefully be doing skills work with the main group in mid-January.
