St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt is confident he can recover from a calf muscle strain to play in the Saints’ next AFL game against North Melbourne on July 1.
Riewoldt kicked two goals in his side’s four-point loss to the Crows in Adelaide on Friday night, despite suffering the injury early in the match.
“I haven’t done one before so I’m not exactly sure how to read it,” Riewoldt told Seven’s AFL Game Day on Sunday.
“I went into the rooms. I got checked by the docs and they gave me the okay to continue.
“It was one of those ones where you are probably not going to do much more damage.
“I’ll have a scan, probably tomorrow.
“I should be fine to go.
“We’ve got the break coming up which is perfect timing.”
The five-time club champion has kicked 33 goals in St Kilda’s 6-6 start to the season, their first under new coach Scott Watters.
“It was nice to get on the end of a few last week against Gold Coast,” Riewoldt said of his seven-goal haul in round 11.
“We’ve had a really good spread of goalkickers which has meant we’ve all gone under the radar a little bit.
“It has certainly been an enjoyable forward line to play in.”
Gold Coast also have a bye next week and are licking their wounds following a frustrating seven-point loss to North Melbourne on Saturday night at Metricon Stadium.
Defender Rory Thompson limped off during the final term with an ankle injury but is expected to be fit for the Suns’ round-14 clash with West Coast on June 30.
However coach Guy McKenna suspects Seb Tape’s knee injury may be more serious after his leg was caught under North forward Lindsay Thomas during the third quarter.
“Sebby’s looks bad. A bit too early to assess that at the moment, but it looks nasty,” McKenna said.
