Riewoldt wins Coleman as Tigers-Port draw

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt wrapped up his second Coleman Medal with six goals at the MCG on Sunday as the Tigers and Port Adelaide fought out the AFL season’s first draw.

The Tigers came from as many as 18 points down late in the third quarter to push two goals ahead in time-on in the last term, before the Power rallied to tie the scores at 16.10 (106).

A snapped behind to Port Adelaide skipper Domenic Cassisi with 19 seconds left levelled the scores.

It was a fitting end to Richmond’s season, as their capacity to cough up leads late in games ruined their finals hopes.

It meant they finished the year with 10 wins and a draw, while the Power had five wins and a draw, with Sunday’s result their first points under caretaker coach Garry Hocking.

While Riewoldt added another Coleman Medal to his 2010 award, Richmond star midfielder Trent Cotchin did his Brownlow Medal chances no harm, overcoming a slow start to pick up 31 touches and be arguably best afield.

Brad Ebert was excellent for the Power, with 22 disposals and three goals, while former Tiger key forward Jay Schulz took 12 marks and kicked four goals.

Riewoldt started the game three goals behind joint goal-scoring leaders, Fremantle’s Matthew Pavlich and Geelong’s Tom Hawkins, who both finished the home and away season with 62.

He had only two until deep in the third term, when the Power were 18 points clear after Brett Ebert snared two majors in two minutes.

But Riewoldt answered with two of his own to ensure his Coleman Medal win and put the Tigers within a goal at the last change.

The Tigers kicked five of the first seven goals of the final quarter, including two more to Riewoldt, to move two points clear.

But goals to Port’s David Rodan and Aaron Young, either side of a Shane Edwards soccered behind, narrowed the gap to a point before Cassisi’s levelling score.

Pre-game, Richmond skipper Chris Newman announced he would relinquish the captaincy for next season, although he will play on.
