Riewoldt insist Saints still an AFL threat

Don’t try telling St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt the Saints’ AFL premiership window has closed.

After playing off in the 2009 and 2010 grand finals, the Saints just scraped into last year’s finals before parting ways with coach Ross Lyon.

Time may be starting to run out for Saints’ stalwarts like Stephen Milne and Lenny Hayes both 32, Jason Blake 31, and Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke, both 29.

But champion forward Riewoldt is adamant opportunity still knocks for the Saints, whose sole grand final win was 46 years ago.

“I certainly don’t subscribe to the premiership window theory, it’s alive as long as we want it to be alive,” Riewoldt said.

“The ball is in our court. We’re fit, we’re available, we’re ready to go.”

Impressed with the depth of the Saints roster, Riewoldt believes new coach Scott Watters will have some pleasant selection posers.

“There’s probably six or eight spots that are up for grabs, maybe ten or 12 guys that can fill those,” Riewoldt said

“I certainly think we’ve got a great depth of players that can fill a variety of positions.

“I don’t envy Scott’s job at the moment.

He felt youngsters Arryn Siposs, Jamie Cripps and Tom Ledger could all get opportunities early in the season.

The 219-game veteran is still looking to develop his game after more than a decade in the AFL.

“I think you are constantly trying to improve, otherwise you get left behind,” Riewoldt said.

“I’ll play maybe a slightly varied role this year probably spend a little bit more time up the ground.”
