Richmond are bracing for more bad news after star forward Jack Riewoldt hurt his right hand in the Tigers’ disappointing 44-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG.
A week after losing important defender Alex Rance for the season, Riewoldt crashed to the turf at the Punt Road End during the second quarter of Thursday night’s clash and came up cradling his wrist in obvious pain.
“I’m not too sure,” coach Damien Hardwick replied when asked about Riewoldt’s status after the 17.8 (110) to 10.6 (66) loss in front of 70,699 fans.
“I think it’s some sort of hand injury. How severe it is, I’m not too sure at this stage.
“He’ll have scans either (Friday) or Saturday. We’ll wait and see how that one goes, but he did finish the game.”
The Tigers can ill afford to lose Riewoldt for an extended period after defensive stalwart Rance was lost for the season with a knee injury suffered in the round one win over Carlton.
Richmond, who laid just 31 tackles, were monstered at the contest and badly beaten in the air by the Pies, who had a whopping 167 more possessions and 96 more marks.
Despite those lopsided statistics, the Tigers were just 12 points down at three-quarter time before Collingwood rattled home with five goals to one in the final term.
Hardwick declared the performance “un-Richmond-like”.
“You can’t get beaten up at the uncontested game and also the contested game,” the coach said.
“That was really disappointing.
“We were lucky to be within a couple of goals at three-quarter time, to be perfectly honest.
“We’ve got some work to do.”
To rub salt in the wound, Dylan Grimes faces a nervous wait to see how a lunging high elbow on Jamie Elliott is assessed by the match review officer.
