Record-breaking AFL Cox urged to play on

Dean Cox is many things at West Coast.

He’s the class clown; a freak; the heart and soul of the club.

But most of all, he’s a champion.

Cox will equal Glen Jakovich’s club record of 276 games when he fronts up in Saturday night’s clash with St Kilda at Patersons Stadium.

The 32-year-old shows no signs of slowing down, and teammates are eager to see the six-time All-Australian play on into a 15th season next year.

Cox, who doubles as West Coast’s ruck coach, will wait until later in the season before making a decision on his playing future.

Fringe ruckman Callum Sinclair is eager to see Cox play on, even if it limits his own playing opportunities for another year.

“He’s one of those guys who’s good at everything,” Sinclair said.

“He’s a freak. I’m in shock sometimes.

“He’s basically the life and soul of the club. He’s the clown and arguably the most professional at the club.

“He really unites the playing group and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down, so we might get a few more years of him.

“For someone like him to come off the rookie list and (become) arguably the best ruckman of all time – it’s a terrific story.”

The Eagles are riding high on top of the ladder following thumping wins over the Bulldogs (65 points) and Melbourne Demons (93).

West Coast will start hot favourites against St Kilda, even though the Saints are unbeaten after fighting wins over Melbourne and GWS.

New Eagles coach Adam Simpson has opted to play three ruckmen during the opening two rounds, with Sinclair helping out Cox and Nic Naitanui with the tap duties.

The trio also spend sizeable stints up forward, but Sinclair knows he will be the one who misses out if the Eagles decide to go back to a two ruckman policy.

Sinclair has booted 1.3 in the opening two rounds, and the 24-year-old rookie knows he has to make more of an impact on the scoreboard if he is to hold his spot alongside spearheads Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy.
