Rayner ready for No.1 AFL pick pressure

Whether he ends the night as the newest No.1 draft pick or not, Cameron Rayner is more than ready to embark on his AFL career.

Rayner is widely regarded as the favourite to be taken by Brisbane with the first overall selection at Friday night’s draft meeting in Sydney.

“It’s been a long wait and, now that it’s finally come to it, it’s really exciting,” Rayner said.

“I’m a little bit nervous, but I’m just looking forward to seeing where I start playing footy.

“It’s been out there in the media that (No.1) could happen, but I’m not going to believe that until I hear it on draft night.”

Speculation surfaced on Thursday that Brisbane had already told Rayner they would make him this year’s top pick.

“I had a meeting with them the other day … I went in there expecting to figure it out but I probably came out more confused,” Rayner said.

“I’ll just know when everyone else knows.

“I’m just looking forward to seeing where I will end up and start playing footy.

“I said right from the start of the year that if I got a chance to play AFL footy, I’d play anywhere. Brisbane would be an awesome place to live and the club is going forward.

“I’d love to a part of that and, if that happens, I’d be really excited.”

Fellow Victorian onballers Luke Davies-Uniacke, Paddy Dow and Andrew Brayshaw are also a chance to be this year’s top pick.

Davies-Uniacke is widely predicted to be claimed by Fremantle with the second overall pick, Dow is the popular choice to be taken by Carlton at No.3, while Brayshaw could land at North Melbourne, who have the fourth overall pick.

“I think any of those four boys would handle the No.1 mantle well and they’re all a little bit different,” AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan told AAP.

“There’s still a great debate over who might win the coveted No.1 spot.”

The draft gets under way at 7pm on Friday at the Sydney Showgrounds.
