Queensland Oaks 2013 won by Gondokoro

Victorian filly Gondokoro confirmed her staying prowess with a clear-cut win in the Group One Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Given a dream run in the Classic by jockey Rhys McLeod, Gondokoro worked her way into the race from the 1000m, put in her bid on turn and then powered away in the straight.

She held a clear advantage over fellow Victorian Miss Zenella with Sydney filly Vaquera taking the minor placing.

“I honestly thought she was the best horse in the race and she proved it,” McLeod said.

McLeod and trainer Pat Carey are no strangers to Group One success, combining for an Australian Derby win with Ethiopia last year.

“She is a very strong staying filly and she can only improve as she furnishes out,” Carey said.

Gondokoro had won only once in her previous 12 starts before the Oaks but she had been placed in the ATC Australian Oaks during the Sydney autumn carnival.
