Primus set to exit Port: reports

Port Adelaide’s dismal 34-point loss to AFL newcomers Greater Western Sydney has reportedly cost coach Matthew Primus his job.

Adelaide radio station FiveAA and News Limited websites say Primus had crisis talks with the club on Sunday and that his tenure ended immediately.

If true, it was unclear whether Primus was sacked or had a change of heart and decided to voluntarily leave the club.

Power assistant coach Shaun Rehn is tipped to become caretaker coach for the remaining four games this year.

Primus, who coached Port to 13 wins from 47 games, had vowed to fight on as coach when he spoke after Saturday’s match.

“I feel gutted and pretty emotional about it all right now, but I believe in the group,” he said on Saturday.

The 37-year-old was close to tears after what he termed the club’s worst loss since entering the AFL in 1997.
