Newly-retired Greater Western Sydney co-captain Luke Power has won the AFL players’ association’s Madden Medal.
The award recognises players for both on-field and off-field achievements throughout the course of their careers.
Power, who played 302 AFL games, was a triple-premiership player with Brisbane, with whom he also spent two years as co-captain, before joining the Giants for the final year of his career.
He was also on the board of the AFLPA and an ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which assists seriously ill children.
“He is one of the most impressive individuals I have come across in this game,” AFLPA chief executive Matt Finnis said.
“Not too many players retire with three premiership medals, 300 games and the accolade of captaincy at two different clubs.
“The respect he has earned from teammates across the board is testament to his endeavour, values and selfless approach to footy.”
Power won ahead of a field of nominees including Geelong’s Matthew Scarlett and David Wojcinski, Melbourne’s Brad Green, Hawthorn’s Chance Bateman and Hawthorn’s Cameron Bruce.
