Port to break with AFL captaincy tradition

Port Adelaide are set to break with club tradition and appoint Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas as their AFL co-captains.

It will be the first time in the club’s SANFL or AFL history that Port have had co-captains.

Wines and Jones will be confirmed on Thursday and they will take over from Travis Boak, who had the role for six seasons.

The decision will cause a stir, with prominent club figure Tim Ginever saying earlier this month that the club should continue with a single captain.

Ginever, a Port premiership captain in the SANFL, said co-captaincy for Port is “a complete no-no”.

The Port captain traditionally wears No.1 and it is unclear whether Wines or Jonas will take that guernsey.

Wines, the Power vice-captain last year, will miss the start of the season after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in a water skiing accident.

Wines and Jonas finished equal-second in last year’s best and fairest voting behind Justin Westhoff.
