Port coach to ponder full-time gig

Caretaker Port Adelaide coach Garry Hocking says he should know after the next four weeks if he wants to coach the AFL club next season.

Hocking will replace Matthew Primus for the last four games of the home-and-away season after Primus was sacked following the Power’s 34-point loss to Greater Western Sydney last weekend.

“At the end of the four weeks I might think it’s wonderful and see you guys (the media) a bit more regularly or possibly that it’s not for me,” he said on Tuesday.

“There’s obviously nerves that come with the job … but I’m happy to take one step at a time.

“I’ll probably trip and fall at times but it’s just a great experience that I’m really prepared to have a look at and see in four weeks time what the end result will be.”

Hocking said he did not expect to make major changes to the team and the game plan over the next month and it was more a matter of “tinkering”.

“There’s a couple of things we need to fix and fix them quickly and that will be my job over the next four weeks,” he said.

“The expectations are not a win-loss one, it’s just about gaining some respect back from our members and our supporters.

“Hopefully after that four weeks our supporters and the people that follow the club can be a bit happier.”

Hocking takes over at Port with the club at just about its lowest ebb following the axing of Primus and the impending departure of president Brett Duncanson.

A major review of all the club’s operations is also underway.

The side faces an enormous challenge this weekend when they travel to Tasmania to take on Hawthorn looking for just their sixth win of the season.

But Hocking said the Power would go there with a plan in mind.

“We’ll go there with a real positive attitude and have a fair dinkum crack at the footy,” he said.

“It will be a simple plan, we need to just play aggressively and compete.

“That’s what the players will be judged on.”
