Port banking on Neade for AFL spark

Port Adelaide AFL coach Ken Hinkley is banking on Northern Territory product Jake Neade to provide some spark up forward in Saturday night’s game in Darwin.

Port have recalled small forwards Neade and Cam Hitchcock, while former Greater Western Sydney defender Jack Hombsch will play his first game for Port in their round-10 clash with Western Bulldogs.

“We are playing the game at night and he (Hitchcock) will give us much needed speed in the team, which we like,” Hinkley told reporters on Friday.

“We have got Jake also back in the side, so they are both together, which will hopefully create a lot of pressure on the Bulldogs and give us some opportunities to score some groundball goals.”

The team will be wearing a new guernsey for the game that was designed by members of teenager Neade’s community, who are from Elliott, a township about 250km north of Tennant Creek.

Port’s black jumper will feature images of 22 emus in recognition of the 67kg livewire Neade’s indigenous heritage.

“We have had a really strong relationship with the indigenous community for a long time, and we embrace that,” Hinkley said.

“We love it and we just want to make sure we continue to grow that.

“Being a part of this and a part of the community up here is really important to us.”

After making a 5-0 start to the season under new coach Hinkley, Port have lost their past four games.

Hinkley said despite the losses he thought his team had been applying themselves.

“We have just played some sides that were a little bit stronger than us throughout the whole game,” Hinkley said.

“We know our first quarter has caused us some problems, but our second, third and fourth quarters have been strong.”

Hinkley said he was expecting a fast and furious game in the humid conditions of Darwin.

The Bulldogs (2-7 win-loss) come into the match after a nine-point victory over St Kilda.
