Preview:

Port start favourites, but their round-20 Showdown disaster looms large in the memory. Their three-game winning run leading into the finals was against teams outside the top eight. West Coast’s season has been blighted by chronic inconsistency – they have not won two in a row since their three-straight wins from rounds 6-8. And their round-seven win? Against Port Adelaide, at Adelaide Oval. If the Eagles fire, they are every chance. The problem is, it’s a mighty big “if”, especially in the cauldron of an Adelaide Oval final.

Key: Port ruckman Paddy Ryder has enjoyed an outstanding season, putting last year’s Essendon doping suspension behind him with All-Australian selection. Expect Ryder to have the upper hand over Nathan Vardy in the ruck duels. Ryder also is dangerous around the ground with his mobility and marking strength.

AFL News:

Adelaide’s premier onballer Rory Sloane says a high risk of further injury has forced him out of Thursday night’s AFL qualifying final against Greater Western Sydney.

Sloane, after appendix surgery on Tuesday last week, says he hasn’t recovered in time for the Adelaide Oval final.

“I would love to be out there with the boys but I won’t be able to, unfortunately,” Sloane told Triple M radio on Wednesday.

“The risk of doing some damage internally is probably a bit high.”

Sloane said he risked hernia problems by returning too soon.

“That is a potential risk; there’s a few risks … that internal strain can go on if I push it too early coming back,” he said.

“I haven’t quite healed as well as I would have liked and probably just haven’t done enough training in the end as well.”
