Port Adelaide Power vs GWS Giants Preview

The first finals meeting between Port Adelaide and GWS awaits on Saturday night with both sides looking to extend their fairytale seasons.

Very few had the Power or the Giants in their finals calculations, but it’s fair to say both sides have come as welcome surprises throughout the course of the year.

GWS has proven a handful on a weekly basis, as Ross Lyon and the Saints found out in last week’s Elimination Final.

The Giants burst clear early with a five-goal first quarter, topped off with another dazzling performance from superstar midfielder Tom Green, and a three-goal haul from Jake Riccardi.

Port, on the other hand, came undone against the Lions at the Gabba – another concerning loss for a club that had struggled for form over the final month of the home and away season.

Ollie Lord was the only shining light in what was otherwise a bleak performance and at time of publish, it remains to be seen if Charlie Dixon makes a much-needed return to the forward line.

Returning home to the Adelaide Oval could prove a real boost for the Power, but there’s something to be said for a GWS side that has made a habit of winning on the road.

The Giants have won three of their last four away games, not to mention the fact they won quite well against the Crows in Adelaide back in Round 18.

Digging deeper, the Giants have been one of the cleanest teams in the league when it comes to disposals and handballs, posing a real challenge for Port’s elite midfield.

The other main challenge for the Power this week could be inside their own heads.

Todd Marshall’s usually reliable boot cost Port on a couple of occasions against Brisbane, suggesting some of their young players could be feeling the pressure of finals footy.

If the Power can steady in front of goal, they should go a long way to winning this game, especially with GWS lacking any real tall timber on attack outside of Jesse Hogan.

Of course, stopping Toby Greene poses its own set of challenges, especially with Port allowing the sixth-most goals to opponents during the regular season.
