Port Adelaide down Crwos in derby

Port Adelaide sharp-shooter Jay Schulz slotted five goals in a plucky 24-point AFL victory against a wasteful Adelaide on Sunday.

Port banked their third win of the season with an 18.7 (115) to 13.13 (91) triumph against their arch rival at Adelaide Oval.

Schulz led an accurate forward line for the Power, who prevailed despite having less scoring shots.

Port tall Paddy Ryder kicked three goals and Kane Mitchell, Justin Westhoff, Chad Wingard and Hamish Hartlett each scored two.

The Crows, despite Eddie Betts booting five goals and the best efforts of Patrick Dangerfield, who gathered a game-high 36 disposals, fluffed a series of shots at goals which ultimately proved costly.

Port midfielder Brad Ebert was among the best players on the ground, gathering 31 disposals in a damaging display.

His brilliant teammate Robbie Gray (32 touches) and captain Travis Boak (33 possessions) were prolific ball-winners while backman Jasper Pittard was influential.

Betts was Adelaide’s standout and kicked the opening two goals of the game before 49,375 spectators.

But Port then piled on seven unanswered goals in a match-defining burst to gain a 26-point advantage midway through the second quarter.

Adelaide valiantly tried to reel in the deficit but poor goalkicking cruelled them, particularly in the second stanza when they gained traction in field play for no scoreboard reward with five consecutive behinds.

The Crows snuck within five points in the third quarter only for Port to respond to take a 13-point break at three quarter-time.

And after Adelaide kicked the opening goal in the last term, Port’s Mitchell bobbed up with two goals in a minute to put his side on the path to victory.

The Crows’ day was further soured by a calf injury to onballer Rory Sloane, who was substituted in the last quarter.
