Port Adelaide defeat Fremantle Dockers in AFL cup match

Spearhead Jay Schulz kicked three goals as Port Adelaide downed Fremantle by 20 points in Saturday’s AFL pre-season cup match.

The Power prevailed 1.11.11 (86) to 2.5.18 (66) at Encounter Bay, about 75km south of Adelaide.

Port captain Dom Cassisi was a prolific possession winner, novice ruckman Jared Redden impressed while Robbie Gray was also prominent with two goals.

Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich was outstanding, booting two majors, and onballers Nathan Fyfe and wingman Stephen Hill were influential.

But the Dockers suffered an injury to recruit Lachie Neal, who was helped from the field in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return to the fray.

Port jumped the Dockers early and took a 26-point lead at quarter-time – an advantage never relinquished.

Fremantle stemmed Port’s scoring flow in the second stanza as both sides kicked two goals each, but the Power steamrolled their opponents in the third.

Port added another five goals, with Schulz kicking this third major, to Fremantle’s two for the third term to hold a commanding 35-point break at three-quarter time.

The inaccurate Dockers never seriously threatened to reduce that margin in the last term as Port logged their second win from four pre-season cup games.
