Football’s famous Rioli-Long lineage looks like extending to the AFLW.
Danielle Ponter, the niece of Essendon great Michael Long and cousin of retired Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli, will probably join Adelaide in Tuesday’s national draft.
The Northern Territory 18-year-old has nominated SA for the state-based draft.
Unlike many top draft prospects, who have played only for the last couple of years, Ponter started as an 11-year-old in Darwin.
Her mother Susan is Michael Long’s sister.
This year she played alongside Long’s daughter Michaela for Essendon in the VFLW.
Substitute the “her” for “him” and Long’s profile on the AFLW website could sum up so many relatives who have made it to the AFL.
The comments read: “extremely talented footballer with x-factor to burn. Her ability to break lines and take the game on sets her apart.”
Adelaide, whose first pick is at No.8, are on the lookout for more outside run.
Expansion club Geelong have the first two picks and Geelong Falcons midfielder Nina Morrison is the most likely No.1 selection.
Under AFLW draft rules, Victorian players could nominate metro, Geelong or all the state as their preferred destination.
Sunbury 17-year-old Madison Prespakis is arguably the top talent in the draft pool, but the Calder Cannons onballer chose metro.
That puts Carlton, who have the No.3 pick, in the box seat to recruit her.
Identical twins Chloe and Libby Haines are from Burnie in Tasmania and they could go North Melbourne, this season’s other expansion club.
While the Cats have three picks in the top 10, North already have recruited heavily and so their first choice is not until No.25.
