‘Pies pair should be fit for big AFL clash

Colllingwood should have Nick Maxwell and Dayne Beams available for Friday night’s must-win AFL clash against Richmond, but Sam Dwyer is a likely absentee.

The trio were all hurt in Saturday night’s close loss to Geelong, leaving the Magpies with only one win from their first three games.

Key forward Travis Cloke also visited a medical clinic on Monday, but said it was only for a flu shot as he prepares for his 200th senior game.

The Magpies are confident Maxwell and Beams will recover in time from the ankle injuries they suffered against the Cats.

Dwyer has a medial ligament strain in a knee and the six-day turnaround will count against him.

`Pies football director Rodney Eade told the club website that Maxwell would probably need a fitness test, but Beams was in better shape.

Eade added they were more pessimistic about Dwyer.

“If he does miss this week, he’ll only miss the one (match),” Eade said.

North Melbourne have paid a price for Sunday’s gritty win over Port Adelaide, with consistent defender Jamie Macmillan suffering a broken leg.

Macmillan will be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering a non-displaced fracture of his right fibula bone.

Kangaroos football director Geoff Walsh said the injury would not need surgery.

The injury ends Macmillan’s run of 49 consecutive AFL games.

North are also confident that vice-captain Jack Ziebell (shoulder) will return for Sunday’s match against Sydney after he was a late withdrawal from the Port match.

Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge expects to return from a groin injury for the weekend’s away match against Gold Coast, after missing their massive Friday night win over Fremantle.

But Essendon’s new fan favourite Paul Chapman admits he might not play in Perth on Sunday against Fremantle.

Chapman kicked three goals as the Bombers blew Carlton away on Sunday night, but he also hurt an ankle.

“The ankle’s a little bit sore, so I will try to get that right this week,” he told Fox Sports.
