Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy is the round-22 AFL Rising Star nominee.
Grundy’s nomination on Tuesday came after another dominant performance in the ruck for the Magpies, most recently in Friday’s win over West Coast at the MCG, where he collected 11 disposals and 23 hit-outs.
The 19-year-old South Australian has consistently been among Collingwood’s best players since making his AFL debut in round 18 following a knee injury to teammate Darren Jolly.
After making the switch from basketball just three years ago, Grundy has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young ruckmen in the AFL, averaging more than 13 possessions and 20 hit-outs per game.
Collingwood senior coach Nathan Buckley said Grundy had quickly adapted to senior AFL football after overcoming a back injury earlier in the year.
“It has been a fairly steep learning curve for Brodie and he has come in and had an impact from day dot,” Buckley said.
“His competitiveness and his footy intelligence have really driven him to be able to perform the way he has over the last five weeks.”
Grundy was drafted with the Magpies’ first-round pick at the 2012 National Draft, going No.18 overall.
He is the second Collingwood player to receive a AFL Rising Star nomination this season, following Marley Williams in round 18.
